well, fall is here not only on the calendar but weather-wise! i LOVE fall – cool, crisp air and the perfect time to cuddle up with your knitting and start thinking about those presents you want to make for your friends and family! some of you over achievers out there have been making presents all year long, while others are getting into panic mode to try to get things done.
my october yarn of the month is fiber nymph dye works. just got a shipment of variegated, semi-solids, and amazing sock blanks. i, personally, LOVE knitting from a sock blank! no rolling or getting stuck and it just stays put so nicely while you gently tug the yarn along. there are so many gorgeous colors to choose from but i think i’m going to start with one of her new gradient blanks. if you know me at all, you will know i’ve been gaga over gradient yarns for a few years now and they are finally catching on. well fibernymph made two gradients for me on her sock blanks and i think i may have gotten the first two, so of course i must try one! now to figure out a pattern to go along with it.
in october i will also be featuring some amazing new shawl pins and sticks made in nevada by a husband and wife team who do several different glazing techniques. i can’t wait to see them in person! i will also be getting more done roving yarns in within the next few weeks – her mini gradient kits are so gorgeous and some are on their way. the spun bunny dropped off a few new yarns yesterday and i have a few new colors in malabrigo sock yarn.
as you know, i am a big fan of supporting small businesses and i am happy to add these two to my list of small businesses that i support here in the shop. this is going to be my focus from now on – indie dyers, spinners, and other home-grown businesses. so far in my shop i carry items from these small businesses: dusty tree soaps, cynthia crane buttons, fiber nymph dye works, a guy with two needles, done roving yarns, meadowcroft dye works, the prAiry, peppermint knits, shirsty cat, spencer hill, youghiogheny yarns, mountain meadow, imperial ranch, unplanned peacock, lickin’ flames, the spun bunny, g-cat & pi, firesong studio fiber, panorama fibers, laurel hill alpacas, taylored fibers, and i’m sure there are a couple more. i can’t even list the names of all the handspun yarns i have. next year i plan on moving in this direction even more and phasing out a lot of the big companies. i will continue to keep malabrigo and perhaps a few others, but i am happy to help out the little guy, being as i am one and i know how much i appreciate the support of my customers!
Point Beach Scarf is a must-have for this fall season featuring two contrasting skeins of Kauni Effektgarn. A fun, vibrant scarf with a repeating pattern perfect for a beginner knitter or a quick knit for the advanced kniter. Enjoy watching the colors of the Kauni Effektgarn work together as you knit your way through this stunning scarf.
check out the ‘classes & events’ tab on the website to see what’s coming up. please know that you must prepay and preregister for these events for obvious reasons. i cannot tell you how many times someone says they want to take a class, then cancel at the last minute if they havent paid for it. people don’t realize how much organizing and effort goes into scheduling the classes only to go out the window at the last minute. so the new policy is you have to pay to play – and think about it – you don’t do anything without paying first such as theatre tickets, concerts, ordering online, adult education – whatever!
i’m still working on our christmas luncheon which will be at chef dato’s table in derry. i’m working with the owner to nail down a date and menu but it will be within the first two weeks of december. tickets will be sold in advance here at the shop and will be about $25 depending on the menu. more details soon! it will be nice to have a great meal together, good company, fun, and prizes! the tentative date as of today will be wednesday december 13 but this needs to be confirmed so stay tuned!
this thursday is my first feltLOOM play date. if you are at all interested in this amazing machine, you should consider taking this class or one on october 25th or november 9. two hours of playing on the feltLOOM designing a wall hanging or pillow cover. the play times are 1 to 3 and $20 includes your supplies! not many people own one of these machines and they really can do some amazing things. mine is 60″ wide and has over 800 needles!
it is with a heavy heart i announce that my friend, susan cawthern, who owns the beaver yarn shoppe is closing her doors at the end of october. susan is a wonderful lady and has some beautiful yarns. she will be running sales to clear her inventory so please consider taking a drive up to see her and purchasing some of her wonderful yarns. i just recently purchased some of her malabrigo yarns and ChiaGoo fixed circulars. check her hours on Facebook and plan a trip and tell her i sent you! and while you are there, enjoy this quaint little town. debbie, carol and i went last week and enjoyed shopping and eating. takes you back to the good old days when people are walking along the streets and shopping and sitting at little tables. wonderful place!
